Title: Managing disturbances with combustion control
Abstract:
Combustion engines are always subject to disturbances, particularly when they are used in vehicle powertrains. There are many types of disturbances and they affect the engine behavior in different ways and with different bandwidths. The lowest bandwidth disturbances (<10-6 Hz) are hardware related and can be caused by production tolerances and component aging. The next level is fuel related disturbances and disturbances related to ambient conditions (~10-5 Hz but could involve faster transients). The fastest disturbances are the ones related to powertrain interactions and can be up to the order of 10 Hz. It is obvious that no single control solution can handle disturbances spanning seven orders of magnitude of bandwidth and this plenary lecture addresses different methods based on closed loop combustion control using in-cylinder feedback information. The methods range from low bandwidth supervisory control through cycle-to-cycle control to in-cycle control where combustion is actively controlled while it happens.
